Yes, We Republicans Are Marching
Washington, DC – April 23, 2004
The decision to host a delegation, co-sponsor and take part in the March for Women’s Lives was a lot tougher for Republicans for Choice (PAC) than most any of the other co-sponsoring organizations.
“Our decision to step forward came after months of internal discussion,” said Ben Wallner, Director of Administration. “While we all want to be loyal Republicans, we felt we needed to send this Administration a clear message,” he added.
“There are many things we can agree with the President on, like tax cuts and maintaining a strong national defense. But when it comes to protecting women and their rights, we need to speak with a strong voice,” said Ann Stone, National Chairman of Republicans for Choice. “I Marched in April of ’92 and I can tell you our delegation this time will be even larger than it was last time. Many of our members are angry with this administration and wanted to make sure they were represented.”
We have members flying in from as far away as California, Florida and Maine, and we know of at least two buses coming in from New York City with our supporters. We’ve had a constant stream of phone and e-mail from supporters telling us they plan to be there.
Since we have two 45 foot banners that say, ‘Take Abortion Out of Politics,’ that will be held facing both sides of the street, as well as numerous other Pro-Choice Republican placards, we’ll be able to use every available hand.
A survey of Republicans for Choice members (sample size of 1,150) taken earlier this year before the Presidents numbers went down, showed that only 36.8% of the membership definitely plan to vote to re-elect, while 24.5% said that they might vote to re-elect but it could change, and 38.7% had already made the decision not to vote to re-elect the President. “This is not good news for George Bush, or the Republican Party. In 1992 it was a shift among moderate pro-choice men and women in key electoral states that helped defeat his father for re-election. Now the question is, will history repeat itself?” said Stone.
Republicans For Choice is a national organization of over 150,000 Republican Party legislators, activists and voters. Its goals are to remove the current anti-choice plank from the national platform and support Republican pro-choice candidates.
