FDA decision on Emergency Contraception
Puts Politics over Policy, Dangerous Precedent Set

“Reverse your decision. Women’s Health should not be endangered because of political pressure” said Ann E W Stone, National Chairman, Republicans for Choice, PAC (RFC). “If the FDA’s concern as stated were true, that they were worried that those under 16 could be endangered …then their decision should have been to make it legal OTC for those 16 or older or even 18 and older and required proof of age at the drug counter like they do already for alcohol and cigarettes. That would be the common sense compromise while the drug company does the requested study on those 16 and younger” added Stone with anger in her voice.

“Instead it appears that HHS and the FDA have caved to the pressure of the junk science pushed by the so called Religious Right” offered Ben Wallner also of RFC. “Let them sit here where we are and take the calls of the frantic women who need emergency contraception only to find out that their doctor won’t prescribe it due to their religious beliefs…maybe that would change their minds.” he added.

“That is the problem” Stone said, “The real life reasons that many need this contraception as over the counter was lost in this debate. Besides calling for this to go OTC, the Federal Government should mandate that all doctors and pharmacists who want to deny women their right to any contraception, be forced to post that fact in their waiting room, their website and on all their “paperwork” to make sure their female patients are aware of this before they are faced with an emergency…call it truth in advertising” Ms. Stone concluded.
