Will the GOP Leadership Get It Now?
"Unfortunately, Senator Jim Jeffords
isn’t the only Republican moderate who feels alienated from their
Party," said Ann E.W. Stone, National Chairman, Republicans For Choice.
"We hear from our members every week about how they feel the Party has left
them or how their local Party has mistreated them." She added.
RFC had been hopeful about the Bush administration when they saw how many Pro-Choice moderates had been appointed to the administration. It was a very positive sign that all but three or four Cabinet choices were Pro-Choice. But appointments alone don’t determine policy and even the administration doesn’t have total control over the direction of Congress. And it’s clear from the treatment of Senator Jeffords by the leadership that moderates were persona non grata.
"The Republican Party would not have had a majority in either the Senate or the House without the Republican moderates. But instead of treating them like a member of the team they were often shunned or pushed aside" said Ben Wallner, Director of Administration. "So now will they get it, will they understand things have to change?" he added.
