UNION PACIFIC DISCRIMINATES AGAINST WOMEN

In an appalling decision, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit issued a ruling that limits access to birth control. It all started when Union Pacific, the largest railroad in North America, made a reprehensible decision to cover Viagra for men but denied birth control

coverage  for women.

Birth control is basic health care and insurance plans across the country should cover it -- just as they cover other prescription drugs.

Union Pacific deliberately chose to exclude coverage of prescription contraceptives from its health care plan. And now, in a decision just made public, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit has decided to let Union Pacific get away with it. Insurance coverage for birth control pills provides women who might not be able to otherwise afford the protection needed to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

This is blatant discrimination.  It is okay for men to have their sex activity promoting Viagra prescriptions covered by insurance companies, but it is not okay to allow women the protection of birth control to prevent unwanted pregnancies.  This is unconscionable.

Republicans For Choice constantly gets calls from desperate teens and grown women who are hunting for financial support to pay for birth control.  This is not RFC’s mission so we give them names and phone numbers of the Planned Parenthood chapters near them.

Access to birth control leads to healthier pregnancies, children, and families. Planned Parenthood has done a phenomenal job in helping millions of women by helping them with their birth control programs.  This outrageous court decision is a major setback for women's health.

In a split decision, two judges (one appointed by George W. Bush, the other by Ronald Reagan) have decided that, in spite of this different treatment of women, Union Pacific is not guilty of sex discrimination.

How can anyone say covering the costs of dispensing Viagra and not covering the cost for birth control for women is not sex discrimination I will never know.

I guarantee if they put this to a vote among taxpayers, they would find an overwhelming majority of Americans would totally disagree with the Court's decision.

It is obvious these Judges aren’t living in the 21st Century – and women are still considered vessels to carry male’s spawn. This disastrous decision as of now is binding on courts within the seven states in the Eighth Circuit -- Arkansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The next stop should be the U.S. Supreme Court.

Union Pacific should be ashamed of themselves and women across America need to know what is going on.

Union Pacific has set a very dangerous precedent that will have a deep and damaging impact unionized women employees – especially at Union Pacific.

We still can reverse this damage if America will stand up, speak out and fight back.

How?  The first step is to urge Congress to pass the Prevention First Act. Republicans For Choice will be working on this, Planned Parent-hood will be working on this and every other women’s rights group should be working on this as well.

The Prevention First Act will advance a wide range of measures:

  1. expand access to reproductive health care services and
    education programs,
  2. increase access to family planning
  3. increase services, prevent the spread of STDs, and give women the tools they need to make the best decisions possible.

You, as a US citizen, need to call Union Pacific and tell them exactly how you feel about their irresponsible, selfish action.

Funds permitting, RFC would like to do a media ad blitz to alert women across America of Union Pacific’s discrimination against women – and get them involved in getting Viagra coverage removed from health insurance plans or women’s coverage for contraception…quid pro quo !

Call or write your Representatives in Congress and the White House – let’s put this issue right on the front burner – and secure birth control coverage for women once and for all.  They don’t want women to have the right to choose – and now they don’t even want affordable birth control and available.  Enough is enough.

Speak out – make your voice heardWomen are 54% of the voters today.  Let's make our Representatives and insurance companies feel the heat!

It’s past time for contraceptive equality!!!
