& Caucus Listing

Don't ask the wrong question:

"Rudy Giuliani's Primary strategy did not work.  What does this mean for moderate-conservative pro-choice Republicans?

That is the wrong question to ask.

Instead, the question should be what will it mean for the GOP if those pro-choice voters feel alienated and decide to take a walk like they did in 1992 ? Emory University's study of the 1992 election entitled "Its Abortion Stupid" might hold the answer to that question.  It should be required reading for the GOP.

If I were John McCain, I would be asking myself..."How do I keep those voters in the Party and get them to vote for me?"

Just so we are clear on this....

Reading our language below apparently has generated some confusion and misinformation...so let's make it more clear.

We are a pro-choice group and we only ENDORSE pro-choice Republicans running for any office.  In fact, in 1992 Ross Perot tried 3 times to get us to endorse him.  We pointed out that we could have if he had still been a registered Republican but he was no longer -- so no endorsement.

Our language below on McCain is not intended as an endorsement.  We simply stated the facts that John McCain was the second choice, after Giuliani, of our membership.

We do support Rudy Giuliani's contention that given the folks left in the race after Rudy's withdrawal, McCain would be the best one for the Republican nomination.

We just wanted to make sure our supporters did not remember the old Mitt Romney and vote for him by mistake. The old Mitt Romney is the one who used to support a woman's right to choose before he "evolved" in his position...

Hey, one person's "evolved" is another person's opportunism. We did not want them to mistakenly reward Romney's reversal.  Can't blame us for that!

McCain is someone we think we may be able to work with.
Time will tell...

Fasten your seat belts...

As moderate and conservative pro-choice Republicans are we happy with the results of the Florida primary? Yes and no.

Our first choice, Rudy Giuliani, did not win.  He ran a campaign with a risky strategy and it didn't work.  But our number two choice did win...John McCain. McCain came in second in a survey of our membership.

While he is personally "pro life" he has time and again reached out and worked with people across the spectrum.  We know we can work with him to create common ground that will allow moderates and conservatives to come together to rebuild the GOP.

RFC joins with Rudy Giuliani in asking our supporters to consider McCain as they go to vote over the next few weeks.

John is a true American hero with strong and consistent values.  He will provide the leadership that will rebuild America's confidence in itself and among our allies worldwide.

And John McCain's election will be a strong message to our enemies...you don't mess with John McCain, he can and will go the distance!

Antis are At It Again in South Dakota

Voters in South Dakota will face a second ballot initiative to ban abortions in the state. In November 2006 an abortion ban that allowed an exception only to save the life of the woman was rejected 56 percent to 44 percent.

The new proposal widens that exception to include rape and incest and to preserve a woman's health, the Associated Press reported Dec. 14.

Following the 2006 election, opinion polls indicated that about 55 percent of voters would approve an abortion ban if the exceptions were broadened. Only 39 percent of state residents approve of legal abortion rights, according to a November poll.

As written, the abortion ban would eliminate nearly all procedures currently performed in the state, which has only one abortion clinic. Last year, there were 748 procedures.

Anyone who performs an abortion could receive a $20,000 fine and a 10-year prison sentence.

Supporters have until April to collect the required 16,776 signatures to put the proposal on the 2008 ballot.

The 2006 initiative was designed to serve as a challenge to Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion in the United States.

Anti-choice proponents believed that the climate on the current court is ripe to roll back abortion rights, particularly with the April 2007 ruling in Gonzalez v. Carhart, which for the first time barred a specific procedure used after 12 weeks of pregnancy, regardless of the health consequences.

RFC PAYS TRIBUTE TO GERALD FORD

Republicans for Choice joins all other Americans in mourning the passing of President Gerald Ford.  He was the last Republican President who was openly pro-choice.  We remember fondly the support he and his wife Betty have given us in writing, by phone and in person as we have fought hard to bring our Grand Old Party back to its roots -- roots firmly planted in the principles of individual choice, integrity and hard work, individual initiative and smaller government that have been abandoned by many of our elected Republican leaders.

We need to turn our backs on those who would pervert the GOP and seek to support and use "big government" to enforce their own brand of morality and meddle in people's lives.

As we begin 2007 we look forward to gathering with other Republicans at the RNC Winter meeting later this month.  We hope that we can come together by renewing our commitment to these founding principles that center on the proposition that "the government that governs least, governs best."  What a fine tribute that would make to our fallen leader.
